Re: New Math
Speaking of new math... I proved 0 is equal to 1 the other day, and I can prove that any number is equal to a number that is one lesser (or greater).
The proof:
Let x and y be nonzero numbers, and x=y
x=y | Given
x^2=xy | Multiplication
x^2-y^2=xy-y^2 | Subtraction
(x+y)(x-y)=y(x-y) | Factoring
x+y=y | Division
2y=y | Substitution
2=1 | Division
1=0 | Subtraction
You can add/subtract whatever amount to both sides, so you can prove for example that 2000=1999 by adding 1998 to each side, or that -289=-290 by subtracting 291 from each side.
Anyone see it? There is an error, and I know what it is. Do you?

Re: New Math
No, you didn't prove it. You broke the rules of math by doing it, so therefore it's invalid.Senethior459 wrote: I proved 0 is equal to 1 the other day, and I can prove that any number is equal to a number that is one lesser (or greater). I don't get why people say they can prove that. >.>
Because if you have
(Saying that x and y both equal 2, because they equal each other)
(2+2)(2-2)=2(2-2)
You have 0=0
You can't divide. Congratulations on not proving anything besides the fact that if you break
the rules of math, you can get an invalid statement saying that a number equals one above/below it.

since x=y. x-y will be 0
You don't get 1 by doing the division.
(x-y)/(x-y) = not define number.
That's why. Nice trick.

Re: New Math
I hadn't thought about it the way you said, Krypt, but you're right. The problem I saw was what initialD found, that I'm dividing by zero.
