Guitar Hero

Post by Ozzapoo »

Hi. I'm thinking about making a Warcraft III remake of Guitar Hero, but I wanted some of your opinions first.

This map will consist of 5-6 songs, and will make use of the arrow keys LEFT, RIGHT and UP. (If you put down in too it's confusing).
The base system for the map shouldn't be too hard to make, but the only real problem that I face is map size. MP3 files cannot be compressed a lot unless you make it very bad quality. So basically I have two half-viable options.

1. Try to cram all the songs into one 4mb map, and have them be of really bad quality.

2.
  • Release host-only versions which only have one song each
  • Release a full-pack with all the songs, and can be played in conjunction with the host-only maps
  • If you download off host, you only have one song.
  • If you are host and you choose a song that is NOT the one included in your map, there is no song for you while you play
Personally, I am more inclined to go with Option 2. But I want to know what people think about it.

So please, OPINIONS!

Make it into a campaign...That way it can be played with multiple people and can have as many songs as you want over a number of maps..If your big on terrain it will be a hassle..but copying over the triggers for each map and re-adding songs shouldn't be that hard.

However you'll have to try to get the loading screen to the least possible that you can..otherwise it will be pointless...one or two songs per map for a long load isiant really the best...

The terrain won't be too complicated and there shouldn't be too many triggers so the load time won't be too long.

So then yeah, in my opinion it should be a campaign..the only drawback for campaigns like this are the terrain..Triggers can easily be copied over between each map...and with a small load time it would be perfect..if you somewhat compress the quality you can get 2-3 songs per map..and campaigns allow you to link any number of maps together..you can get it to play any number of songs in all...

By campaign you mean like a single-player series of maps, right?

Yeah..but campaign games can be played online as well..at least i think ive played one before..

You use the campagin editor in WE to make em..just look at the hiveworkshops tutorials or thehelpers for the details.

Awesome concept is awesome.

As I see it, as a multiplayer map, delay would be as much as a problem as the music...
Which means it might aswell be singleplayer, thus easier to fit in a map, but not as fun...

With limited doodads, units and efficient triggers, you could probably fit a few songs.
So releasing song packs in different maps would probably be the best option...

Then again, I don't really understand Option 2.
Sounds to me like people some kind of "collided" map...? Or do you mean adding the songs to an MPQ or alike to play them without them being in a map? Either way, if it works...

And of course, Campaign could be smart.

Well...About delay. I don't plan for it to have like an army of units moving to and fro, just a few units, doodads, etc for decoration and the camera stays static the whole game, so they shouldn't experience too much lag, except the host-player latency, which should be 150ms at most if you are to have a 0-score game.
