Hosting Wc3 Custom Games, I've tried everything......

Post by tongbokes »

Hello all, I'm sure this question gets asked a lot but I've searched the forums and google and have come up empty handed. I have a dsl connection and a linksys wrt54g router. I've enabled port forwarding to 6112-6119 both tcp and udp, disabled norton and my windows firewall, updated my router firmware and people are still not able to join my games. I also tried setting myself as a DMZ host, but that didn't work either. I followed all the directions at portforwarding.com and gave myself a static IP as well. Does anybody have even the slightest idea of what could be wrong? I've spent 20+ hours over the past few days attempting to fix this and I still can't seem to fix whatever is wrong.

Any help is greatly appreciated thanks.

Maybe your provider firewalls you... then you have to change the internet service provider -.-"

Maybe it's just the settings on your router that are annoying.. There was a gay setting on my router hidden in the section you'd least expect, which prevented me from hosting for aaggeess!!

Bad idea to turn off your firewall, you never know what might happen... I have no experience with Norton though, I use Kaspersky. Maybe you can't disable any part of Norton, I don't know.
Anyway, what you should do about Windows Firewall is to go to the control panel, and click on it, opening the settings. Then, click the Exceptions tab, and see if Warcraft 3 is there. If you see anything named Warcraft 3, click on it and click the Edit button, to see what it is. If there isn't, click Add Program, and browse until you find Warcraft. I unblocked C:\Program Files\Warcraft III\Warcraft III.exe and C:\Program Files\Warcraft III\war3.exe, because both of those are the game. Warcraft III is the initializer for war3, so I enabled both in the firewall. Another thing to do is click Add Port, give it a name like Wc3, and write in port 6112. Then, just keep adding them, one by one, until you get to 6119. It doesn't work if you just write 6112-6119, it only lets you do one port at a time, for safety reasons-if you unblocked too many, something could get in unmonitored. That will make Windows Firewall allow traffic on those ports.
You should also check if Norton is blocking Warcraft 3, or those ports. If it is, add exceptions for them too if you can. That might help. As long as you know that your router settings are forwarding properly for those ports, on TCP and UDP, then it's something else at fault. It's unlikely it's your ISP, so check the other steps in the process. It's almost definitely the firewall if it isn't the router settings or ISP.

As long as you've got a normal system and a hardware firewall (router) turing off the firewall is no risk at all!

Your modem might have a firewall also. Usually if it is DSL and the modem/ISP is any good at all it has a firewall built into it. If you have Norton get rid of it. It's a POS, the only thing that they are good at is definitions, but their security software is below medium on performance charts across the board. I recommend Comodo or Jetico which are both free and have dominated the market against leak tests (Your firewall is to prevent any leaks coming into/out. If it doesn't ask for your permission then it's not doing a very good job.) They can be annoying with all of the safety pop-ups but configure it right and it's a breeze and keeps you much safer.

If you do not have a firewall on your modem. Then try turning off all firewalls and anti-virus. (Make sure you did some scans if you have any personal information such as banking, SS #, etc...) Now try hosting a game with all router ports set to your current settings. (You are doing everything by the book right now anyways). If this does not work, it is very possible that the server they have your ISP hosted from has different NAT Protocols than your Modem. If this is the case you won't have any luck and I suggest you get a new ISP, because trying to talk them into changing their NAT is about a .01% chance.

Thats all the advice I can give you and I hope it helps.
