I've spent the last hour reading tutorials on deprotecting maps, adding gold triggers and what not but there always seems to be a huge part that you don't explain at the start of the tut. so, do i have to understand basic programming to get started? if so how would i go about that? i've helped idiots before , and i know it's not fun. but could someone help me?

The only prerequisite is that you know how to open the map up with some mpq extractor and extract the .j and reinsert it, after that it's spoon fed on how to insert cheats.

Yup just search mpqmaster or similiar terms and you should find a link to it in the forums here.
