if you deprotect a not very new version, one that few people use, could you use it to reference or would it be completely screwed?
another thing, if i use the newest for reference and nopt play it, would it effect the protected ones, or would it just set itself as its own new map?
i just need it for reference.... the newer of them would be best.

u can't deprotect a protected map without making the the map corrupt!

suppose i wanted to unprotect Undead Assault II 1.5b bets 5 OW (which isn't the newest and it hardly used), could i use to help me make my map by seeing what they did for sertain triggers and such?

yes. u just corrupt the map to play but u can still see the items , terrain and so on!
means u can import to ur / another map .
