It's the day after the first debate, and everyone (where I am at least) is talking about it, so this should be an appropriate time to start the thread.
If you aren't following American politics very much, it is Barack Obama (incumbent, democrat), and Joe Biden (VP) vs Mitt Romney (republican), and Paul Ryan.
The election will take place on November 5. There are 3 more debates, two with Obama vs Romney, and one with Biden vs Ryan.
Here is the full first debate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYKKsRxhcro
What are your guys' opinions?
If you're from the United States, who will you vote for? If not, who do you want to/think will win?

Re: U.S. General Election
I feel like giving Romney a chance, since Obama hasn't hardly done anything (of import) in four years, but I feel as though it will matter little.

Re: U.S. General Election
I am Canadian so I don't catch enough info, and I pretty much don't care, but Romney seems to be an idiot who wants to get rid of (or cut back) all types of medicare.
My mother had to go into the hospital in America quick because she had food poisoning (or thought so). She was looked at for an hour or 2, and sent off with a $750 bill. There is also a story of some guy from Canada who had a heart attack in the US and left the hospital with some outrageous 3 hundred-thousand dollar bill.

How is this justified? How can these doctors sleep at night knowing they saved a mans life, but at the same time ruined these couples lives. I always thought that people that go into the medical profession do so to help people, or is it to adore their Porsche in the garage?
Romney also wants to cut education funding. Sorry to say, but when I talk to Americans, I find that most seem to be as dumb as hammers.
Romney wants to cut pensions and raise the retirement age. With the American population as fat as they are and no health care, how the hell are they supposed to work up into their 70's?? There are almost already more handicapped parking spots than normal.

Personally, I'm not sure about this election.Vegas wrote:I am Canadian so I don't catch enough info, and I pretty much don't care, but Romney seems to be an idiot who wants to get rid of (or cut back) all types of medicare.

Obama says Romney wants to cut all these things. Romney says Obama is lying. I don't know which one is telling the truth (And I do quite a bit of research too)!
But I totally agree with you about the doctor thing. Medical bills are too high, which is one of the reasons Obamacare was passed. Now there are a lot of scary things about Obamacare also, and I believe both sides have a point on this.
Another profession like doctors is the pharmaceutical profession.
Information on what I mean: http://www.naturalnews.com/020345_drug_ ... acket.html
With both these professions, though, I don't think that the individual doctors are responsible for this. It comes from the management who sets the bills. And also, becoming a doctor is hard. Something like 1 out of 100 people get into medical schools, and the bill for medical school is like $500,000

Well according to Americans Germany is a socialist country, yet our overall economy is much better than yours. Cutting back education is the worst idea ever, here in Germany universities are basically free. You can't compete with China in cheap labor, that just won't work. Thus I say you have to invest in your citizens to stay competitive, be it education, healthcare or welfare. If people keep struggling (Look at the occupy movements) nothing good will come from that. And increasing taxes surely isn't a problem if Germany gets away with about 50%.

It was just four years, how much change did you expect? He had to deal with crap like a useless war Bush started. A war you guys started cause you believed one idiot who lied to get refuge. I urge you to watch the "Curveball" interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_80OEyDMxKoBartimaeus wrote:I feel like giving Romney a chance, since Obama hasn't hardly done anything (of import) in four years, but I feel as though it will matter little.
I think Obama did well given the circumstances.Curveball: the codename for the man who persuaded the world to invade Iraq. He admits for the first time to a Guardian News TV crew that he was the source of the false biological weapons claims.

Re: U.S. General Election
When did Romney say he was going to cut education?
I really don't think he would if he got elected. He may be many things, but I don't think he's stupid enough to cut education.
I don't think Obama has done a good job. Oh well, I doubt it matters though as the entire world seems to hate Romney, I think Obama will be getting a second term. I'll be interested to see how it goes.
There are already enough things wrong with America for me to consider learning a new language and moving, probably temporarily, to see other cultures and see if there is a place I like better than America. It will be interesting to see what path either one leads the country down. Both sides say the other will destroy America, but I really don't think so!
