Thats pretty big...

Not like... 'big', but that is very un-common size for a signature or banner. Most of forums do not allow you to use Nx500 signatures.
As for banner, it does not meet the unsaid laws of etic usage (it would annoy the viewer unless you restrict its appearance with javascript).

'Fine' sizes for your case are:
Signature: 500x100 .. 512x160
Banner: 500x50 .. 500x200 / 64x500 .. 150x500
Avatar: 100x100 .. 256x256

Hmmm. I wouldnt be too happy having to keep scrolling over such a large banner. Lets make it 140x500 instead, that would keep me unraged.
