Editing a virus

Ok, let's say I *accidently* download a fake song which is a virus.

I don't really care much for it, but I'm wondering if editing it through notepad++, deleting all text inside, then saving.

Would this work?

What would that do? For that matter, why would a virus be plaintext? Wouldn't it need to be compiled to do anything?

The virus itself isn't plaintext.. it is compiled.

That's my point. What would opening it with Notepad++ do? It wouldn't be recognisable code; a hex editor would be better for opening it. And why not just delete it, instead of removing all the information inside of it?

After deleting text inside, file turns out to be 0 bytes.

I could delete it, yes, but this is just a quicker alternative, a peculiar question.

Oh, I'm pretty sure some viruses would "jump" if it detected it was deleted / moved.
