Squares, Rectangles, BH's "impossible" math problem and more

Post by Lanaya »

Squares are rectangles
rectangles aren't squares
Spoiler for Def. of Square:
In geometry, a square is a regular quadrilateral. This means that it has four equal sides and four equal angles (90 degree angles, or right angles).
Spoiler for Def. of Rectangles:
In Euclidean geometry, the term rectangle normally refers to a quadrilateral with four right angles. This is a simple rectangle.
So basically Squares have four equal sides and 90 DEGREE ANGLES
Rectangles have four sides and 90 DEGREE ANGLES
But rectangles can't be Squares because they do not have four equal sides

Trying to help Black-Hole with his geometry :)

BH's problem.

Its been snowing at a heavy and steady rate, this morning a snowplow started plowing. After 3 hours he stoped, clearing 5 miles of the street. At what time did the snow plow start plowing?

Can you guys get it? It's his exact words (except for one typo, but I left the "stopped" typo). Apparently the answer is 11:42 am.

-----------------------------------------

Can snow melt at night if you need to use a snow plow the next morning?
(21:59:45) Black-Hole: IF YOU NEED A SNOW PLOW ITS NOT GOING TO MELT DURING THE NIGHT

-----------------------------------------

My answer, 3 hours before he stopped.

Bart, it's still you all over again xD.

Okay, think of it this way, squares are a kind of rectangle, therefore they ARE rectangles. Rectangles are not, however, squares.

It's like a kangaroo is a marsupial (animal that carries its young in a pouch) but marsupials are not kangaroos (because there are possums and other animals in there, too).

EDIT: This was an EPIC FAIL NIGHT IN CHAT.

A square is a perfect rectangle/rhombus as it has four congruent sides and four congruent angles. A rectangle however can have 2 congruent pairs of each. AKA, a equiangular parallelogram.

Everyone here is wrong.

Rectangles are sometimes squares. (Saying that they are never squares is incorrect)
Squares are always rectangles.

Squares are defined as regular quadrilaterals, with angles of 90° and all sides the same length.
Rectangles are defined as quadrilaterals with angles of 90°, which immediately means two pairs of opposite sides due to Euclid's fifth postulate. This means that a square does fit under the definition of rectangle, and vice versa: some rectangles are squares (the ones where all the sides happen to be the same length).

The snowplow one is a trick question, since it doesn't give a stopping time. We can figure out the snowplow's average speed, but we have no idea when he started, since we don't know when he stopped. It's just three hours before he started.

Snow can melt during the night if you need a plow the next morning. Just not all of it. That, or the plow is not needed the next morning.
