Is there a way to assign priotiries on my router?

Post by afis »

I am managing a router that a number of other people have access to and would like to know: Is there a way to assign priorities to individual machines or IP addresses or in any other way so my computer gets first dibs on bandwidth and they don't nerph my speed. I don't want to completely deny them access but I want it to be such that I get at least 50% of the usual speed even if they are online downloading stuff. Can this be done?
My router is a Westell Versalink 327W
This is not technically a Warcraft problem but when someone else starts downloading my battle.net game starts lagging like all hell so there is relevance.

This might come as little to no help to you, but if you go to your router's homepage...

(type in your default gateway in the adress bar. If you do not know this number and do not know how to find it, (on a Windows) Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt and type in "ipconfig" It should tell you your IPAdress, Subnet Mask, and Default gateway.) You need the user+Pass to log in. By default it's admin and password (well, mine's password1). If you don't know it, call your provider, I'm sure they can figure it out.

...you can mess around with some options there and you might find something helpful.

If that didn't help, there's this website where you can ask questions to an expert and get a (relatively) fast and helpful reply.

Hope this helped a bit.

My router supports priorization - some do, some don't.

so do, some don't.
well I am writing to find out if mine does, or instructions/tips on how I can discover that. for instance what to look under, network options/port forwarding/firewall or whatever it may be categorized under if it exists. or maybe if you know a site that lists routers and says whether or not they support it.
you can mess around with some options there and you might find something helpful.
I tried but don't know what alot of the stuff means and without knowing where to look I didn't get that far.
(P.S. I do know how to log in and did port forwarding a while ago)

Well I asked them around 3 PM, still waiting for a reply. Still hoping I could get an answer here though.

From what I can see, if you have the user manual, if you look on page 100 or so, it LOOKS like what you're looking for. But I don't have your router and haven't bothered trying to prioritize my router's connections (Cuz I never really thought about it =S).

If you don't have your manual, I googled it for you. You can find it here.

Look on page 100 and see if that's what you need. I just skimmed it.

Hope this is what you're looking for =S

Looks like it only allows you to prioritize TCP-ACK packets. You should do it anyway, it speeds up page loads and downloads.
Mine allows to prioritize some users over others.

Try to look at ur router first, and do special tcp and utp forwarding so u get dibs first and do it in a way that ur ip will get all the forwarding first and try to hog some of the ports :D
