I don't seem to have any problems with xdep... Try using 1.21 World Editor and it should work just fine.

Use RMPQEx. You can usually get a listfile that's almost complete, if not full. MPQRecover also works, but not as well.

Because the way those tools find filenames is to look through all the files, like .w3a, .wts, .j, etc. and find mentions of filenames. It then checks each unnamed file that it found in the mpq, and sees if one of them matches the name. At least, I think that's how they work.
