That's because you're basically doing:
(111-last two digits of year you are born) + (year you are born)
^ Gives you age this year. ^ Year you are born.
Last two digits of year you are born is also equal to (year you are born) - 1900.
This being said, though, if I were born in 2002 or any year after 1999, it would be 02 + 9, which doesn't equal 111.
