Nvidia has released their Tesla computer (has been for some time...) with a GPU rather than a CPU.
It really is x250 faster than a regular CPU. We do have super-desktop computers now.

Not to mention the Tilera 100-core processors/motherboards, which would allow a single computer
to run an entire new station. (This is just insanely expensive)

This is so wrong. The whole GPU stuff is just for SOME parallel calculations. I know about that stuff, we had a NVIDIA guest lecturer at university talking about it. No way you boot an operating system on a slow 600mhz Tesla GPU, it would take ages to boot and lag like hell. It wouldn't matter how many of them (around 900) are there since operating systems and most applications barely parallelize. (would only use 1-2 out of the 900) Besides, cpus do things like double precision float calculations - GPUs don't. Overall GPUs are optimized for gaming, which means calculating tons of pixels at the same time at low precision. They can do lots of calculations in parallel, but each slow (~600mhz). And they are limited in the calculations they can do efficiently, unlike most modern desktop CPUs. The desktop CPUs we have are general purpose ones which do about any calculation at the same speed. (about 1-5 clock cycles per calculation) Also they have way higher clock rates (usually 2 to 3ghz) to do lesser parallelized calculations with high speed. -> Why do I even answer that crap? x.x
