Dekar: Please Explain

Post by Ozzapoo »

Black-Hole and I just had a lengthy argument in chat, and we stumbled across a few thing that need professional explaining by an expert like Dekar!

The topic was: Are the individual Speedtest.net servers for the various cities property of Ookla (owner of Speedtest.net)?

Black-Hole: Yes. If the host servers require the Ookla software to be installed, then technically Ookla owns the servers because their software is operating.
Ozzapoo: That doesn't change a thing. Does me installing Ubuntu on a server make it the property of Canonical? No. Therefore, the individual city servers are not owned by Ookla.

Who is correct?

Something to remember - Ookla owns Speedtest.net Speedtest.net dosnt host its own server they use servers that people request them to use,http://speedtest.net/host.php

Black-Hole: Yes. If the host servers require the Ookla software to be installed, then technically Ookla owns the servers because their software is operating.

And to close of, may I remind you, Dekar, of the procedures of hosting a speedtest testing server.

1. Submit an application at the aforementioned address.
2. If your server is deemed acceptable, you will be asked to pay for Ookla software.
3. You install and configure the software so it'll work with speedtests.
4. Done.

As long as you pay the hardware it's your server - not theirs! Solved?
