Use either Handbrake or Videora. Both are free, and both work well. Lots of support for formats, easy to use, etc.

also.
wait.. personally i dont like handbrake. doesnt work well on my comp.
i also use videora though. it converts from almost anything to .mp4 (itouch/iphone compatible). also you can use media-convert.com i think. just put media-convert on google.
