Lol
Yeah HF searching for md5/sha1 collisions. I heard the amazon cluster is capable of doing it for only 20.000$.
So cloud computing ftw? Just rent it for every map you cheat XD

No computer in the world could defeat a properly implemented hash system

And why so?
They usually exploit mathematical problems which aren't even proven unsolvable.
When Quantum Computers are out they will break rsa, el gamal and so on in seconds
I really don't think you should rely on hashes!

Well, with whatever hash algorithm you pick, someone could announce a break tomorrow. But, that's true of anything
Besides, almost all of the known attacks on current hash algorithms are collision attacks, whereas what you want is a preimage attack. These are significantly harder.
Also, I think Quantum Computers are overhyped.

The point is, the risk of someone finding a practical preimage attack against your hash is for all practical intents and purposes, 0. You might as well worry about the chance that someone has spyware on your computer, (which is actually much much more likely).

You know that wc3 map collisions work, right?storyyeller wrote:The point is, the risk of someone finding a practical preimage attack against your hash is for all practical intents and purposes, 0.
So strike that zero

But I think that's why they told us never ever to use homebrew algorithms for security related stuff in our university lectures -.-
I think hashes are the fail and you shouldn't rely on them. This forums passwords are hashed, but I wouldn't ever released them anyway. They might provide a bit security over plaintext, but really don't rely on those. I have rainbowtables that break windows password hashes for up to 14 letters in about 10 minutes - hashes are dead. The German Chaos Computer Club recently broke the SSL certificate signing using md5 collisions - took them 2 days with 300 ps3s. Sure those were only collisions, but another proof that hashes suck.
