Fencing is a great sport!

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I also prefer knives. They are concealable and I love the spring action. With my butterfly, it's fun to do tricks and such. Personally, I like guarded swords better. Yes, it adds more resistance, but that's not really a huge issue unless you're in sword on sword combat. I prefer stabs because it's a lot more painful and usually leads to a critical hit whereas a slash may only break a few layers of skin, obviously it's likely that you can cut off a limb, but a stab is overall more deadly. Stabs are also harder to parry than slashes, which is why I find them more effective.

edit: I've wanted to try fencing. I don't like that they use rapiers, since I hate that kind of sword. I dont even see how one of those could slash, can it?

I guess it all depends on style. But, a Japanese sword could use stabs or thrusts, too. You just have to support the bottom with the palm of your other hand and preferrably be in a low stance and use the force coming up to penetrate.
I must prefer slashes over thrusts because they are, for a fact, more powerful. With a Japanese sword, it's fast, too. Also, if the sword is sharp enough and the motion is fast enough, you could definately break the skin. You can make a perfect cut in a newspaper with just a wooden sword (it's awesome, you should try it) if you swing fast enough.

Fencing is meh. As stated before, I'm not much a fan of stabs and thrusts.

Yeah, slashing is defininetly effective. I just prefer stabbing and thrusting because I enjoy a more brutal style. However, I once took my wakizashi and threw a banana in the air and cut it in half for fun. Never even felt the resistance. I gotta try something a bit tougher I suppose. On my katana set, my wakizashi is the only one that's sharpened atm. I keep it next to my bedside for protection. You never know :P

EDIT: Uploaded a pic of my Set. Don't mind the drumsticks and electrical ball :D. (bad quality, taken from my phone)
