That's what I was thinking.

Lack of ANY desktop icons is just over the top for cleanliness. You might as well just have this small bar at the bottom, and the rest blank, (which, it effectively is for you guys).

Too many icons, and you're messy, :D

I agree. You don't leave your actual desk top empty, do you now?

Title: I Just Lost the Game
I actually do try to keep my real desktop fairly clean. Most of the space on it is taken up by my computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse and mousepad, speakers (the subwoofer is below the desk), and battery backup. I can't have much stuff on it, or stuff starts covering my keyboard and mouse quickly.

I have no icons because I don't need icons. I have shortcuts to everything, up in the Applications, Places, and System menus at the top of my screen. I can also hit Alt+F2, type the program name, hit enter, and it'll open for me. Why would I want icons?
When I'm working on something, I keep those files on my desktop, for ease of access. I just try to keep it clear, so that when I am working on something, I don't have files from all sorts of things all over my desktop.
